Investors Can Still Find Value In Energy Sector

View of the assembly of the oil drill

It?s not too late to find value in the energy services sector. Parker Drilling Company (PKD) continues to be a value stock even as shares hit new multi-year highs. This Zacks #1 Rank (strong buy) is now trading with a forward P/E of 14.2, up from 11.9 in mid-November.

Parker Drilling provides contract drilling solutions, rental tools and project management to the energy industry. It has 25 land rigs and 2 offshore barge rigs in its international fleet. Its U.S. fleet consists of 13 barge rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.?The company?s rental tool segment supplies equipment to operators on land and offshore in the U.S. and some international markets.

Parker Surprised in third quarter by 38%

On November 3, Parker reported its third quarter results and surprised on the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5 cents. Earnings per share were 18 cents compared with the consensus of just 13 cents. PKD only broke even in the year ago quarter.?Revenue rose to $176.6 million from $172 million a year ago. The quarter was boosted, again, by big growth in the rental tools segment. Sales rose 30% to $62.4 million from $48.1 million a year ago.

Demand for drill pipe and related products, especially from operators drilling in the shale plays, continued to expand.?The level of international and deepwater Gulf of Mexico placements also increased in the quarter. U.S. drilling revenue rose 94% to $28.9 million from $14.9 million a year ago.

For the quarter, Parker had an average of 10.7 barge rigs employed compared to about 7.6 barge rigs which were employed in the third quarter of 2010.

Zacks Consensus Estimates Rise

The estimate picture for Parker looks good. As you can see from the price and consensus chart below, estimates fell off a cliff, along with the stock price, during the Great Recession in 2008/2009.

But the earnings have turned it around and now the chart is very bullish, showing the 2012 consensus estimate again rising another 45% after an expected 550% earnings growth in 2011.?That is a huge turnaround from 2010 when the company made just 8 cents for the entire year.

Beyonce Fans Weigh In On Baby's Anticipated Arrival

From the birth date to the sex of the baby, fans share their thoughts with MTV News.
By John Mitchell

It's almost here, and no, we're not talking about New Year's. Here at MTV we're waiting patiently for an even bigger event: the birth of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby.

And depending on whom you ask, Queen Bey's little prince or princess might be here sooner than any of us thought. According to various media reports, Beyoncé may even be in labor right now.

Rumors that the 4 songstress, who was one of MTV's top Newsmakers of 2011, was set to give birth Wednesday (December 28) first surfaced on Media Takeout, with two nurses at New York's Saint Luke's Roosevelt Hospital allegedly telling the celebrity gossip site that they were informed last night that a "celebrity VIP" who had reserved half of the hospital's luxury labor and delivery floor would be arriving to give birth Wednesday.

There has been no confirmation that the rumored VIP is indeed Beyoncé, and representatives for the star did not immediately respond when asked for comment.

Fans of the "Countdown" singer and her hip-hop mogul husband are starting to get very excited about baby Jayonce. When MTV News took to the streets of New York to ask Bey's fans their thoughts on when they expect the baby to make its debut and whether it will be a boy or a girl, they had plenty to say.

Most of Bey's fans told MTV they expected the baby to be born in January, with one perhaps astute fan zeroing in on New Year's, saying, "I think Beyoncé's baby will be born sometime in January, maybe on the first."

We found only one dissenter on the chilly streets of NYC, and he seemed to have the best knowledge of past public statements from the couple, including an early-September interview with Beyoncé that announced that the baby was actually due in February. "I trust Jay Z, I think he's a good guy," the fan said. "Him and Beyoncé are a good couple, so they wouldn't lie to the public. So Beyoncé's baby is going to be born in February."

And nearly all of the fans we surveyed believe the power couple is expecting a baby girl. Perhaps they caught wind of de facto auntie Kelly Rowland's slip of the lip on a London red carpet in early November, where the former Destiny's Child singer said, "I have no idea what I'm going to buy Beyoncé at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible. She won't be spoiled, but she will be very well looked-after."

One fan was particularly excited for a baby girl because she hoped the babe picked up Beyoncé's good genes. "Hopefully a girl," she told MTV News. "Probably because I'm a fan of Beyoncé's looks."

One thing all could agree on was that Jay and Bey's bundle of joy would jump right to the top of the celebrity baby power list. "A power baby, obviously," one fan said, while another added, "It's gonna be a pretty cool baby, that's for sure. Probably gonna run New York City by the time he's 13 or 14."

Do you think Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby will be a boy or a girl? Let us know in the comments!

Tennis - ATP World Tour - Qureshi Visits Lahore Cancer Hospital

by Robert Davis

?|?

Asiam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and his wife, Faha, visited Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, this week.

The newly-weds were received at the largest hospital, specialising in cancer treatment in Pakistan, by twin Afghani girls, who both suffer from cancer. The two of them share same type of cancer.

"Tennis has blessed me so much this year," said Qureshi, who serves as a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) goodwill ambassador for flood relief.

"Making the Barclay's ATP World Tour Finals opened my eyes and gave me hope to work even harder for next year. I felt that if I can give some hope to others who suffer from life's challenges they too might fight harder as well.

"The lessons I have learnt from tennis I would like to give back to those in need of hope and inspiration."

Germany, France call for new EU treaty over debts

By msnbc.com news services

PARIS -- The leaders of Germany and France called Monday for a new European Union treaty to ensure that the region's debt crisis never happens again.

After a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the leaders would prefer a treaty agreed by all 27 members of the European Union, but would also accept a treaty among just the 17 countries that use the euro.

The new treaty should include automatic sanctions for countries that violate rules meant to keep government deficits in check.

The meeting comes at the start of a crucial week for the eurozone, as it struggles to convince markets that it is able to solve its debt crisis.

"We want to make sure that the imbalances which led to the situation in the euro zone today cannot happen again," Sarkozy told a news conference.

"Therefore we want a new treaty, to make clear to the peoples of Europe, members of Europe and members of the euro zone, that things cannot continue as they are," he added.

This treaty would include automatic sanctions for states who fail to meet limits on deficits, as well as a budget-balancing rule across the euro zone.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

US orders review of student work visa program

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has ordered an "extensive and thorough review" of a foreign exchange program that has been used by U.S. businesses as a source of cheap labor and exploited by criminals to import women to work in the sex industry.

In the latest debacle for the J-1 Summer Work Travel visa, a federal indictment unsealed last week accuses the mafia of using the cultural exchange program to bring Eastern European women to work in New York strip clubs.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee's immigration subcommittee also has been gathering information on the J-1 visa, which was created in 1963 to allow college students from other countries to spend their summer breaks living, working and traveling in the U.S.

As the program has grown to bring more than 100,000 young people here annually, it has become as much about money as cultural understanding.

The State Department has made several changes since an Associated Press investigation last year uncovered widespread abuses, including living and working conditions that some participants compared to indentured servitude.

In one of the worst cases, a woman told the AP she was beaten, raped and forced to work as a stripper in Detroit after being promised a job as a waitress in Virginia.

More common than sex trade abuses is shabby housing, scarce work hours and paltry pay. In August, dozens of workers protested conditions at a candy factory that packs Hershey chocolates in Hershey, Pennsylvania, complaining of hard physical labor and pay deductions for rent that often left them with little money.

A State Department spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Clinton "has called for an extensive and thorough review of the program."

"We continue to be committed to working to strengthen the Summer Work Travel Program to safeguard the health and welfare of the participants," the official said in an email late Friday. "We have already instituted one set of reforms and are working toward additional ones that take additional measures to protect participants and prioritize the original cultural intent of the program."

The New York case was made public just days after the State Department opened a period of public comment on proposed changes that would require companies that sponsor the participants to gather more information about employment and living arrangements.

It's not clear if the proposed changes would have prevented the situation in New York, in which authorities say fraudulent offers for jobs as waitresses were used to help Eastern European women get visas to come to the U.S. Instead of working in restaurants, they allegedly danced in strip clubs. Authorities say members of the Gambino and Bonnano crime families were involved, along with the Russian mob.

The reforms being considered by the State Department would limit and refine the types of jobs students can have, expand the list of prohibited employment categories, and strengthen the "the cultural aspects of the program to ensure that the objective of the program ? positive exposure to the United States ? is accomplished."

The agency already prohibits participants from taking jobs "that might bring the Department of State into notoriety or disrepute" but the AP found that strip clubs and adult entertainment companies openly solicited J-1 workers.

Most of the abuses in the J-1 program over the years have been blamed on unregulated, third-party labor brokers who work with the students. Critics say the students have gotten little help from companies designated as sponsors by the State Department.

The State Department said in November that it has temporarily stopped accepting any new sponsors and will limit the number of future participants to this year's level, or about 103,000 students. The State Department also revised its rules to require more oversight by its 53 designated sponsors, which help students arrange for visas and find jobs and housing in return for a fee.

"Foreign exchange student abuse continues due to lack of oversight by State and the unadulterated greed of the exchange sponsors," according to Danielle Grijalva, director of the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students, an advocacy group. Grijalva called on the State Department to enact a strict moratorium and impose sanctions for sponsors who fail to maintain the integrity of the program.

Under the J-1 program, foreign students are granted visas for up to four months and often land jobs at hotels, resorts and restaurants.

Participation has boomed from about 20,000 students in 1996 to a peak of more than 150,000 in 2008, and roughly 1 million foreign students have taken part in the past decade. The students come from around the world, with some of the top participating countries being Russia, Brazil, Ukraine, Thailand, Ireland, Bulgaria, Peru, Moldova and Poland.

Scientists find monster black holes, biggest yet (AP)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? Scientists have found the biggest black holes known to exist ? each one 10 billion times the size of our sun.

A team led by an astronomer at the University of California at Berkeley discovered the two gigantic black holes in clusters of galaxies 300 million light years away. That's relatively close on the galactic scale.

The previous black hole record-holder is as large as 6 billion suns. A black hole is formed by the collapse of a super-size star. It's a region where nothing, not even light, can escape.

The scientists say their findings suggest differences in the way black holes grow, depending on the size of the galaxy.

The research was released Monday by the journal Nature.

(AP) ? Laura Gonzalez was happy to be back at work after three weeks away that included a stay at a battered women's shelter. She saw it as the beginning of a new life. One without her husband and the father of her four children, she told co-workers. She wasn't going back to him this time, she said, and left for home.

Less than an hour later, her 24-year-old husband, Jose Avila, launched a brutal final assault. First he shot his wife three times. Then, he began shooting the children. Avila's final act was to kill himself.

Two of the children died at a hospital Thursday, a day after their two siblings were killed in the shooting that rattled the small southeast Texas town of Bay City. Their mother is hospitalized in critical condition.

As details trickled out, a picture emerged Thursday of a family long struggling with violence, including an assault reported by Gonzalez just before Thanksgiving. After that, she went to a battered women's shelter.

"I asked her how she was doing because I knew she was at the crisis center. She said she was trying to make something of her freedom and a better life for herself and her children," said Alejandro Gonzalez, a fellow waiter at La Casona, the Mexican restaurant where Gonzalez worked.

"She wanted to make a better life for his kids because they see all the violence," he added, recounting the conversation he had with Gonzalez hours before Avila turned on her.

Although Gonzalez left the trailer home she shared with her husband after reporting the assault, Bay City Lt. Andrew Lewis said she refused to press charges. He didn't know how long she stayed at the shelter.

Wednesday's violence unfolded on a quiet street in Bay City ? a town about 65 miles southwest of Houston ? just as two nearby schools were letting out. The couple started arguing inside the trailer, and Avila shot his wife twice, Lewis said. She ran out to the front yard, where Avila shot her a third time. Then, he turned on the children.

"We heard ... that he was walking around waving a gun," Lewis said, describing the violent scene that unfolded on a lawn now decorated with a makeshift memorial of teddy bears, candles and prayer books. At least one student witnessed the incident.

Two of the brothers, aged 3 and 5, died of their wounds at a Houston hospital Wednesday. Their 2-year-old sister and 4-year-old brother had been on life support but died Thursday. Gonzalez was in critical condition Thursday night at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police have not officially released the names of the victims, but co-workers and neighbors identified Avila's wife as Laura Gonzalez.

The family had moved into the trailer home near Bay City's Western-style downtown about a year ago, neighbors said. They appeared to live a quiet life. On occasion, next-door neighbor Isuro Perez heard them arguing, but it appeared to be nothing out-of-the-ordinary. Just a run-of-the-mill dispute between a married couple.

"He always plays soccer out here in this field out here, plays soccer with his kids," Perez said, pointing to a grassy area opposite the row of trailer homes. "They were nice people, nothing went wrong really. They were a happy family."

At work, though, Gonzalez portrayed a different picture. Alejandro Gonzalez said he once saw her with a black eye. And Ruby Gomez, a waitress at La Casona, said Laura Gonzalez had told her about problems she had with her husband.

"She had to leave to get the kids in the afternoon because he threatened her that if she left him he was going to kill the four kids and her," Gomez said.

Once, Gomez said, Gonzalez told her Avila had locked her in the house and gone to work. She escaped through a window and went to a shelter, Gomez recounted. That was the second time she left him, and vowed not to go back.

The first time "he convinced her that he was going to change and that he really loved his kids, and convinced her to return to live with him," Gomez said.

Still, the tragic outcome of the relationship came as a shock to Gonzalez's co-workers and to other residents of Bay City ? a town of just over 17,000 people surrounded by large ranches and farmland. The shooting was the talk of the town Thursday, as residents drove slowly past the couple's home.

Some stopped to add something to the growing memorial. Others cried. Several prayed.

"It's going to be sad for the momma when she wakes up and finds out she lost her children," said Gloria Carranza, a 41-year-old Bay City native who added pink and blue balloons to the memorial.

"Things like this don't happen in a small town like Bay City," she said.

6 songs that made a city stand out

By Chris Rodell, msnbc.com contributor

If your city were a song, you?d want it to be upbeat, symbolic, historical, enjoy a catchy melody and, yeah, sure, have it be one of Elton John?s hits.

Philadelphia hit the jackpot in 1975 when, as a favor to a friend, the popular singer-songwriter and his lyricist wrote ?Philadelphia Freedom,? a song that 36 years later remains a musical love letter to the City of Brotherly Love.

TOM MIHALEK/AFP/Getty Images

Visitors tour the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, a city linked to the 1975 hit song, "Philadelphia Freedom."

?The reason it will always work so well for Philadelphia is because people hear it and they think it?s about Philadelphia?s role in so many historic struggles for freedom,? said Cara Schneider, a spokesperson for visitphilly.com. In fact, the song was written for tennis star Billie Jean King, co-founder and owner of the Philadelphia Freedoms, a tennis team that continues to play today. The song?s enduring popularity makes it as much a part of Philadelphia as Ben Franklin and Rocky Balboa.

Other cities have gotten similarly lucky. Here are a few more memorable melodies:

  • ?Cleveland Rocks,? Ian Hunter, 1979: ?They said Cleveland was uncool and L.A. and New York City were cool,? Hunter once told reporters. ?I didn?t see it that way. Cleveland had a lot of heart.? Hunter, an Englishman, helped change the perception. So did Drew Carey, the star of the Cleveland-based ?Drew Carey Show,? which set the show?s opening credits to Hunter?s song. The show's cast lip synched the lyrics as they danced across parts of the city. It also doesn?t hurt that Cleveland has been home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1986.
  • ?Viva Las Vegas,? Elvis Presley, 1964: ?This song will always be the best song about Las Vegas because it touches all the reasons why people love coming to Las Vegas,? says Dr. Michael Green, professor of history at the College of Southern Nevada. ?Viva Las Vegas? is the title song from the movie of the same name, the one that features the sizzling on- (and off-) screen chemistry between Presley and co-star Ann-Margret. Peaking at a lackluster -- for Presley -- no. 29 on the charts, the song and the city have become inseparable. The song has been covered numerous times, including by Ann-Margret in the 2000 film ?The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.?
  • ?I Left My Heart in San Francisco,? Tony Bennett, 1962: As much a vivid cityscape as a song, Bennett said the tune ?helped make me a world citizen.? With its wistful vignettes about little cable cars climbing halfway to the stars and foggy air chilling the city by the bay, it?s a melodic parade of postcards, a song about not being there that somehow makes everyone feel like we?ve never left.
  • ?Do You Know The Way to San Jose,? Dionne Warwick, 1968: Rand McNally couldn?t have done a better job of putting a single city on the map. It?s the song that helped launch a million Nor-Cal-bound conventioneers. ?It?s amazing how a song can still resonate from all those years ago,? says Meghan Horrigan, spokesperson for local visitor?s bureau, Team San Jose. ?It has a way of making what is the 10th largest city in America seem like a friendly small town where everyone feels like they belong.?
  • ?New York, New York,? Frank Sinatra, 1979: This indelible song about one distinctive East Coast city has the audacious feel of a pop culture anthem. Originally written for Liza Minnelli in the 1977 Martin Scorsese film of the same name, it was left to Sinatra to give it its signature swagger. As brash and robust as the city it describes, the song conveys all the excitement and electricity Manhattan means to the world.

Santa Ana winds: How the West was hit by hurricane-speed winds

Santa Ana winds combined with a storm system to produce 100 m.p.h. winds in California and other Western states. The science behind the Santa Ana winds and this storm.

Hurricane-force winds whipped through much of the western United States Thursday, sparking wildfires, knocking out power and flipping semi-trucks ? but there's no tropical storm driving the intense gusts.

In Southern California, these freakish winds are called Santa Ana winds, strong down-slope winds that blow through the Santa Ana Mountain passes at speeds of 40 mph (64 kph), according to the National Weather Service.

The current weather system caused damage far outside of sunny SoCal, however, and the winds are among the worst in decades, meteorologists said. Widespread gusts as strong as those of Hurricane Irene at landfall are expected to continue into Friday, Dec. 2.? Firefighters in California are responding to wildfires spread by the winds and a major stretch of interstate was shut down Thursday because of toppled trucks.?

The strong winds throughout the West Coast are caused by an extreme pressure change between the Northwest and Southwest regions. A sprawling high-pressure system following a cold front has created a difference in pressure that sends wind surging southward. In the Northwest, a strong high-pressure system built along with a clockwise flow of winds. In the Southwest, a low-pressure system developed along with a counter-clockwise flow. The tight so-called pressure gradient that formed between these systems is driving winds over mountains and through the California canyons.

The winds can be of tropical storm strength(winds less than 74 mph, or 119 kph) at lower elevations and hurricane-strength (74 mph or greater) above 1,000 feet (305 meters).

Winds this strong can topple trees onto power lines, knocking out power. Already today, 34,000 are without power in Northern California, 25,000 have lost power in Southern California and Los Angeles Airport lost power for an hour last night.

In Southern California, 80 mph (129 kph) wind gusts have been reported in higher mountain passes. Near Los Angeles, wind gusts of up to 40 mph have been reported and gusts of up to 80 mph have been seen in some canyons. Winds were so strong Thursday that Pasadena, Calif., firefighters were responding to calls of downed trees every 12 seconds, according to the Weather Channel.

Outside SoCal

The strong winds aren't just a Southern California thing. Near Sacramento, wind gusts of up to 40 mph were reported. At higher elevations, gusts topped 100 mph (161 kph), said Bill Rasch, an NWS meteorologist in Sacramento. Rasch told OurAmazingPlanet that winds this strong aren't unusual for the area, but said "in general it's a pretty strong storm."

Oil hovers at $100 ahead of key US jobs report

(AP) ? Oil prices hovered above $100 a barrel Friday in Asia as traders awaited a U.S. jobs report for evidence about the strength of the U.S. economy and demand for crude.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was up 60 cents to $100.80 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 16 cents to settle at $100.20 on Thursday.

In London, Brent crude was up 50 cents at $109.49 on the ICE futures exchange.

Crude has jumped from $75 during the last two months amid signs the U.S. economy will likely avoid a recession. Investors will be closely watching the Labor Department's November unemployment report later Friday for evidence economic growth is strengthening, which could justify higher crude prices.

Analysts expect the economy added about 120,000 jobs last month.

Traders are also concerned about rising tensions over possible sanction against Iran, OPEC's second-largest producer, because of its nuclear program. Some analysts, such as J.P. Morgan, say that Iran may pre-emptively cut oil exports if sanctions are imminent, a move that would send oil prices soaring.

"This would undoubtedly shock the oil market, and the initial market shock could be in the $20 to $30 per barrel range," J.P. Morgan said in a report. "The risks of such a disruption have materially increased."

In other Nymex trading, natural gas fell 0.3 cent at $3.65 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil added 4.8 cents to $3.02 a gallon and gasoline futures gained 7.4 cents to $2.63 a gallon.
