Drone could become mosquito weapon in Florida Keys

The drone, a powerful but controversial weapon against terrorism, is about to take on a new and seemingly inexhaustible enemy: the black salt marsh mosquito.

Seeking a high-tech edge in the daily battle to beat back the swarms, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District on Monday will begin testing a next-generation drone developed by a small Gainesville robotics company.

The drone, about half the size of the ospreys commonly seen dive-bombing mullet in the Keys, won?t be equipped to spray or blast bugs. Instead, it will be rigged with a thermal camera designed to survey difficult-to-reach mangrove jungles that are the breeding grounds for the marsh mosquito, the most prolific biter in the island chain.

If the bird-size eye in the sky can accurately detect shallow pools where mosquitoes morph from tiny larval worms to buzzing blood-suckers in just days, it could save mosquito fighters time, effort and money, said Michael Doyle, the district?s executive director.

?Our people on the ground have to walk an hour to a marsh and find out what?s there,? he said. ?It?s hard to cover all those places at once. If something like this could allow them to map where the water is, we could move a lot more quickly.?

Whether or not the drone proves to be an effective mosquito-hunter, the pioneering test shows how unmanned aerial vehicles, or UVAs, are quickly evolving. Drones have revolutionized warfare and have been adopted by law enforcement, raising muddy political and privacy questions that are still being sorted out. But they also are being employed for an increasing array of commercial and research uses.

They have helped track poachers in Africa, monitor wildfires in California and capture gases spewing from a volcano in Costa Rica. In coming years, researchers at the University of Florida hope to be able to dispatch squadrons of drones no bigger than paper airplanes to gather data from hurricanes, ice shelves or other extreme locations where manned aircraft can be at risk.

?I would have laughed two years ago if you would have told me this could help with mosquito control,? said Derek Lyons, vice president of sales for Prioria Robotics, a company founded by UF engineering and business students, that builds the Maveric drone being tested in the Keys.

?You put it in people?s hands and it becomes like the iPhone,? he said. ?You have no idea what the applications are going to be once you get it there.?

In the Keys, the potential application is to help the largest and most challenging mosquito-control operation in the state.

Marsh mosquitoes are not public-health threats like Aedes aegypti ? a carrier of dengue fever that readily breeds in developed areas ? but they are the most common annoyance, fast and furious breeders that erupt with every rainstorm or tide change that floods mangrove thickets. The key to controlling them, Doyle said, is directing the district?s helicopters to hit breeding areas with bacteria granules that kill developing larva before they take wing.

Doyle estimated the tactic eliminates about 80 percent of marsh mosquitoes. Those that escape are controlled by spraying, but with increasing restrictions to protect vanishing tropical butterflies, areas for that option are shrinking, he said.

?The noose is kind of tightening in terms of our ability to spray for adults,? he said. ?We have to improve the accuracy of killing them at the larval stage.?

a new opinion in Telecommunications about Apple iPhone 4S 16 GB

Purchased my iPhone 4S 17 months ago, and I have to say it is THE best piece of technology I own! There are just so many apps to suit any purpose, I manage my household budget, set up reminders for all appointments, do my online shopping, banking etc and so much more, the camera is a great quality and it gets used daily. Internet is so easy to use, I often prefer to use my phone for that over the laptop, I feel it's much quicker and convenient to use. I also find the phone, sturdy and solid, has been dropped many times and still only has a few unnoticeable scratches here and there. The only negative things are that you cannot expand the memory, all those photos, music and apps soon add up! And it's impossible to block pesky calls and texts (Android offers good apps for this, but none available for iOS) I also don't like that you have to purchase ringtones from iTunes whereas many other phones you can choose from your music selection. But that's just how iOS works. The phone itself is fantastic, really easy to use with many features. I honestly would not be without it

Summary: Excellent phone with everything you need at your fingertips. Would definitely recommend

Asia stocks flat as traders await next Fed step

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were little changed Monday as traders weighed the consequences of an anticipated phasing out of the U.S. central bank's unprecedented stimulus program.

The Federal Reserve been aggressively buying government bonds to push down interest rates and return employment to normal levels after millions lost jobs in the recession that followed the 2008 financial crisis.

The Fed says the program has helped stimulate the economy by making it easier to buy homes and invest in businesses. The Fed has also said the program is not indefinite and will be phased out when the economy improves.

Recent economic data and public statements by Fed policymakers have led investors to conclude that the Fed will begin winding down its $85 billion a month in bond purchases starting as early as September. Falling bond yields in the U.S is one sign that traders believe the Fed's move is imminent.

But analysts said a sharp increase in the cost of credit could stifle growth, which will make the transition tricky and could make stock markets shaky.

"If it looks like the removal of funding is having too much of an adverse effect on the local economy it (the Fed) will have to step back in; or the more likely scenario, it will extend the timeframe for the complete removal of monetary stimulus," said Evan Lucas of IG in Melbourne, Australia.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.1 percent to 13,669.77. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.2 percent to 1,915.60. Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.1 percent to 22,495.74. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.2 percent to 5,123.80.

Trading was suspended in the Philippines due to severe flooding. Mainland Chinese shares were mixed. Taiwan and Indonesia fell.

On Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average closed out its worst week of the year. The Dow was dragged lower by a weak performance from retailers and companies sensitive to higher interest rates. The Dow fell 0.2 percent to 15,081.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 dropped 0.3 percent to 1,655.83. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.1 percent to 3,602.78.

Benchmark oil for September delivery was down 10 cents to $107.36 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 13 cents to $107.46 on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3333 from $1.3319 late Friday. The dollar rose to 97.56 yen from 97.53 yen.

Asia stocks mixed as jobs data reinforce Fed shift

BANGKOK (AP) ? Expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will start to phase out its monetary stimulus had a mostly negative impact on Asian stock markets Friday.

A fall in weekly U.S. jobless claims to a near six-year low Thursday reinforced views that the economy is strong enough to withstand having less extraordinary support from the Fed. The Labor Department reported that weekly claims slid 15,000 last week to 320,000, the lowest level since October 2007.

Analysts said the sharp fall makes it more likely that the Fed will scale back its $85 billion-a-month purchases of government bonds in September. The purchases have helped lower interest rates to spur borrowing and economic growth after the global financial crisis of 2008 sparked a recession.

The stimulus program has been a boon to stocks, into which investors have plowed money in search of investment returns that outpace bonds. Traders have come to view a withdrawal of the Fed program as a negative for stocks even in the face of evidence that the U.S. economy is improving.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 13,698.69. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.8 percent to 5,111.10. Benchmarks in the Philippines, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand also fell.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng swung between gains and losses and was marginally lower by midday at 22,519.31.

Mainland Chinese shares surged. The Shanghai Composite Index rose a sharp 5 percent before settling later with a 3.2 percent gain to 2,148.39. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index gained 1.3 percent to 1,013.60. Taiwanese shares also rose.

Analysts said the movement toward Chinese stocks reflected a diversion of funds toward China from the U.S. While the Fed is expected to tighten its monetary policy, traders suspect China's central bankers might go the other way.

"We have seen some funds coming back to Hong Kong and China," said Kwong Man Bun, chief operating officer at KGI Securities in Hong Kong. "I suspect some funds believe the U.S. stock market is peaking in the short term. The build to the upside will be relatively small, and that is why they switch to markets that are lagging behind, such as Hong Kong and China."

Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi fell slightly to 1,922.51. South Korean companies that operated various projects in North Korea gained ground Friday after the two Koreas agreed to work toward reopening a jointly run factory park in the North. Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., the largest shareholder in Hyundai Asan Corp., the developer of the Kaesong industrial complex in North Korea, jumped 7.8 percent.

Negative corporate news out of the U.S. also led to frayed nerves. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, cut its profit and revenue forecasts for 2013. It also reported second-quarter results that missed Wall Street's estimates.

Cisco Systems announced plans to cut 5 percent of its workforce, roughly 4,000 employees, as sales slow. Cisco's announcement led to selling in other technology stocks because the company is regarded as a bellwether for the industry.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 225 points, or 1.5 percent, to 15,112.19 ? its worst day in nearly two months. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 1.4 percent, to 1,661.32. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.7 percent, to 3,606.12.

Benchmark oil for September delivery was up 6 cents to $107.39 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 48 cents to $107.33 late Thursday in New York.

In currencies, the euro fell slightly to $1.3342 from $1.3349 late Thursday. The dollar rose to 97.70 yen from 97.07 yen.

SAN FRANCISCO? - Prosecutors in suburban San Francisco charged a white woman on Wednesday with assaulting a black musician after he dedicated a song to slain teenager Trayvon Martin on the same day a jury reached a verdict in the racially charged case, court documents showed.

Lester Chambers, 73, the former lead singer for the Chambers Brothers, had urged the district attorney for Alameda County to charge Dinalynn Andrews-Potter, 43, with a hate crime for shoving him down while he was performing a peace-seeking spiritual at a blues festival on July 13.

The disturbance, captured on video, happened the same day a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of the unarmed black teenager in a verdict that spurred nationwide protests.

Video of the performance shows Chambers singing into the microphone with a band backing him up when a woman rushed to the stage, jumped up and shoved him so forcefully that he fell backward into sound equipment.

The Alameda County district attorney found no evidence of racial animus and charged Andrews-Potter, who retired from the U.S. Navy and says she suffers post-traumatic stress, with felony assault and elder abuse in connection with the incident in the San Francisco suburb of Hayward, court documents showed.

Police arrested Andrews-Potter right after the incident and subsequently released her, and a warrant was issued for her arrest on Wednesday. It was not immediately known if she had retained a lawyer in the case and attempts to reach her for comment were unsuccessful.

?I certainly wanted her charged for an assault and hate crime because that?s what it was,? Chambers told Reuters in a telephone interview from his northern California home.

?She got right up into my face on stage with a microphone in my hand asking God to change this violent world we live in from hate to love,? he said.

Chambers, best known for the hit song ?Time Has Come Today,? said the shoving left him so battered and bruised he was unable to walk off the outdoor stage. Paramedics put him on a stretcher and transported him to a hospital.
