Galifianakis pays rent for once-homeless woman

COLEMAN-RAYNER

Zach Galifianakis escorted Mimi Haist to the "Hangover Part II" premiere and after-party in 2011.

Zach Galifianakis' character, Alan, is always doing the unexpected in the "Hangover" movies -- and the actor is apparently the same way in real life.

Galifianakis has helped an 87-year-old Los Angeles woman climb out of homelessness, finding her an apartment and paying her rent, and he has escorted her to premieres of his films, the New York Daily News reports.

The actor met Elizabeth "Mimi" Haist in 1994 when he visited the Fox Laundry laundromat in Santa Monica, Calif., where she volunteered, subsisting on tips from customers, the Daily News reports.

Just two years ago, he learned Haist was homeless and had been staying with various friends. Galifianakis arranged a small apartment for her, paying her rent, and introduced her to actress Renee Zellweger, who furnished the apartment, according to the newspaper.

In a 2010 interview conducted in the laundromat, Haist told Richard Stearns from Partners Trust Real Estate Brokerage that she had "no family left."

Before Monday night's Los Angeles premiere of the actor's new movie, "The Hangover Part III," the Daily News reported that Galifianakis would be escorting Haist to the event. "I?m looking forward to it," Haist told the Daily News. "I like the excitement of it."

Although Galifianakis was very visible at the event on Monday, there was no confirmation that Haist went as his guest. The premiere itself was overshadowed by the shocking news out of Oklahoma, where a devastating tornado hit Monday.

"Just like with any disasters, you feel silly doing a red carpet thing,"Galifianakis told USA Today.

The actor noted that celebrity hoopla always seemed strange to him, but especially in the storm's wake. "All of this is very bizarre to me and silly," he told USA Today. "The worship of celebrity culture is bad for our culture, to be honest. ... But as far as Oklahoma, obviously, you just hope and pray that things will turn up."

The actor delighted fans by signing autographs and at one point, climbing into the trunk of a car as if he was going to ride home there before jumping out to ride in the car's back seat.

Galifianakis' character plays a major role in the final film of the "Hangover" trilogy, which opens May 23.

"If you talk to people who love these movies, they?ll often say they wish they had a friend like Alan, and that?s largely attributable to Zach," director Todd Phillips told the Philippine Star. "He has such sweetness behind his eyes, that he can say and do most anything and you?ll think, ?Oh, he didn?t mean it like that.? So he gets away with all sorts of things."

HBT:?Ruiz's hamstring a worry for Phillies

The Phillies might, yet again, be without starting catcher Carlos Ruiz for an extended period of time.

Ruiz was lifted from Sunday afternoon?s game against the Reds after straining his right hamstring while running the bases in the bottom of the second inning. Ruiz will presumably be placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, and Humberto Quintero will likely be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Erik Kratz came on to catch for Ruiz on Sunday and will probably start for the Phillies going forward.

Ruiz, 34, was batting .235/.286/.275 with no homers and nine strikeouts in 56 plate apperances since returning April 28 from his 25-game amphetamine?suspension. Hamstring strains often require 2-4 weeks.

Seamless and GrubHub are merging to form a giant food delivery service

Seamless and GrubHub are merging to form a giant food delivery service

Seamless and GrubHub, two of the biggest food delivery services in the US, have just announced they'll be merging into a combined company, with the name of the new operation to be decided at a later date. (SeamHub? Grubless?) Unlike some other transactions we cover around here, this does seem to be a merger in the truest sense of the word, with GrubHub founder Matt Maloney stepping up to the role of chief executive officer and Seamless CEO Jonathan Zabusky staying on as president. Though we don't yet know what the new service will be called, the companies are already saying it will serve 500-plus US cities, with more than 20,000 restaurants taking orders. Also, as hinted in that press release below, the merger will give the new mega-company more financial flexibility when it comes to further growth opportunities. Next up: Delivery.com?

Mustapha Salma on hunger strike in protest against the Polisario ...

By Youssef El Kaidi

Morocco World News

Fez, May 20, 2013

The Sahraoui activist Mustapha Weld Sidi Mouloud who is exiled from Tindouf Camps in Algeria for two years and a half so far in Mauritania declared that he will enter in an open hunger strike in front of the delegation of the High Commission for Refugee Aid in Nouakchott starting from May 20th, until the settlement of his status.

Mustapha Salma said in a statement issued on Sunday, May 19 that he made this decision after exhausting all the means of legal communication with the parties concerned with the settlement of his status at the level of the offices of the High Commission of Refugee Aid and the authorities of Mauritania. He noted that he hasn?t yet got any positive response concerning his request to get a passport and his right and the right of his family to reunite and live together in normal circumstances.

The decision of hunger strike comes, according to the statement, ?in waiting for the High Commission of Refugee Aid to fulfill its commitment to finding a solution which may bring my family together after two years and a half of separation and sufferance following my prevention from returning to my children in the Sahraoui refugee camps on the Algerian territory and my exile to Mauritania.?

Mustapha Salma held all the parties concerned with his plight responsible for forcing him to take such a decision and for what might result out of it ?due to their procrastination in the search of a plausible solution and the ignorance they pay to the inhumane conditions that [he]and [his] children undergo.? He appealed to people of conscience in the world to support his right to mobility and the right of his family to reunite with him.

Following his ?explicit support? of the Moroccan proposal meant to resolve the conflict in the Sahara on the basis of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty; Mr. Mustapha Salma Weld Sidi Mouloud was kidnapped on September 21st, 2010 by the militias of Polisario upon arrival at the border checkpoint leading to the Tindouf camps and was held in a secret location.

The Sahraoui militant, who served as the General Inspector of the police of Polisario, was released at the end of 2010 and handed to the High Commission of Refugee Aid in Mauritania after an international campaign for his release.

91% Gimme The Loot

All Critics (56) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (5)

'Gimme the Loot' is ... meandering and a little shallow. And even at 79 minutes it feels a little too long for what's essentially the film equivalent of a short story.

A thousand-watt jolt of mischief, a spunky, funky, ebullient indie that packs its 81 minutes with cinematic exhilaration.

It may be a slight movie, but it has its sunny charms.

A movie about teenage taggers in the Bronx should be fast and raw, scruffy and loose, and Adam Leon's Gimme the Loot is just that.

As it lopes along, the movie offers a warm but very sharp portrait of New York's have-nots and their uneasy relationship with the haves.

"Gimme the Loot" shouldn't be as appealing and exuberant as it is, it really shouldn't.

The film's strong suit is its use of locations.

The film is episodic and determinedly offbeat, funny at its best, boring at its worst.

Shot on the streets of New York in a loose, freeform style, this lively comedy-drama feels somewhat underdeveloped, leaving us doubtful about its realism.

It's a great deal of fun, emotionally touching, and even surprisingly old-fashioned.

Some of the movie doesn't exactly convince, and some of the scenes have an actors-improv feel to them, but there's always plenty of humour and energy.

Endlessly entertaining, refreshingly light-hearted and bursting with summer soul, Gimme The Loot joins the pantheon of great New York movies.

It's a shaggy dog story with a certain amount of charm but not nearly enough drama.

The movie is unpolished, and it matters not a jot, because Leon has written super roles for these kids and invests their relationship with such sly feeling.

Hickson walks the line between bravado and vulnerability, while Washington has a charisma, spark and beauty that should ensure this won't be the last we see of her.

Bolstered by a low-key but assured aesthetic and a soundtrack of vintage soul and doo-wop, the film is infectiously enjoyable, with frequently amusing insights and an affable shagginess.

Out of nowhere, Adam Leon might just have delivered the first great New York film of the decade.

Charming and engaging low-budget indie with a witty script, likeable characters, a strong sense of time and place and a pair of terrific performances from its two young leads.

Funny and freewheeling, it's a joy.

A slim, low-budget coming-of-age tale whose richness lies entirely in its interstices. A keenly observed work that celebrates the unfettered joys of youth, and rewards by reminding of the power of a simple tale told well.

Simultaneously real and hopeful, "Loot" has almost no plot, but when the setting is so fresh and the characters feel so raw and alive, who needs one?

Ghetto laughs with a sophisticated point of view.

This charming brewpub marries the rustic Mediterranean-American dishes from chef and owner Jennifer Hill, with an in-house brewing program from Chris Cuzme that is garnering positive reviews from patrons and critics alike. Cuzme?s love of beer led him to help organize NY Craft Beer Week with Josh Schaffner, held earlier this year. At the pub, the warm room, with communal tables, muted, mottled walls and ubiquitous candles, encourages flirtatious conversation over a Colonial Nugget Stout, Beauty Booty Blond Ale, Spraytan (the unpale ale) or Hamber Smoked Amber Ale.

Beer has a long and heady history in the Crescent City, dating to the mid 1800s and owing to the large number of Germans who settled here. At one time, 10 breweries operated within the city limits. Today there?s just one: NOLA Brewing Company. In addition to its signature lagers and ales (NOLA Blonde, NOLA Brown Hopitoulas, 7th Street Wheat), the craft brewery also produces seasonal offerings, such as its fittingly named summer release, Hurricane Saison. College student, masked gunman die in New York break-in

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? A Hofstra University junior sharing an off-campus house with her twin sister and several other college students was shot and killed during an early morning break-in Friday that also left the armed intruder dead, police said.

The shooting at a private house only steps from the Long Island campus cast a pall over the university community gearing up for commencement ceremonies this weekend. Hofstra's president said in a statement that the ceremonies would go on as scheduled.

It wasn't clear who fired the fatal shots or how many rounds were fired, but authorities said police were involved in the shooting, which happened about 2:30 a.m. A weapon was found inside the house, police said.

Nassau County police and Hofstra University identified the slain student as Andrea Rebello, 21, of Tarrytown, N.Y. Her sister, Jessica, was also in the house at the time of the break-in but was not injured, police said. The gunman was not immediately identified.

"It's my daughter, my baby daughter," a crying Fernando Rebello told The Journal News outside his home Friday afternoon. "She was so beautiful. I'm so confused.

"I don't know what to do," he said, declining to discuss the incident further.

The two sisters, another woman and another man were inside the two-story rental house when the gunman, wearing a ski mask, forced his way in, according to Nassau County Inspector Kenneth Lack. The intruder allowed the third unidentified woman to leave, and she called 911. Police provided no other details on the man who was in the house at the time of the break-in, except to say he was not injured.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that the woman called 911 from near an ATM. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

"Today is the last day of finals and this should be a happy day on campus; but it's not," said Hofstra freshman Scott Aharoni of Great Neck, as he passed through the area rife with yellow crime-scene tape early Friday morning. "It's really sad."

Victoria Dehel, who lives four houses away, said she heard what sounded like fighting. At first she ignored it, figuring it was from rowdy students coming home from a bar.

Suddenly, "This girl was shrieking," followed by loud bangs just seconds later.

"It didn't sound good at all," Dehel said. "I turned to my boyfriend and I said, 'I think someone just got murdered.' It was awful."

The university sent a text alert to notify students and staff.

"While our hearts are laden with grief, this weekend's commencement ceremonies will go on as scheduled," Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz said in a statement. "The accomplishments of our graduates must be recognized, and together our community will heal and find the strength to move forward."

Andrea Rebello and her sister were 2010 graduates of Sleepy Hollow High School, according to principal Carol Conklin-Spillane. Andrea was a public relations major at Hofstra.

"They were smart happy beautiful young women," Conklin-Spillane said. "I speak about them together because they were very much a matched pair. They were best friends by choice."

Andrea Rebello quoted Benjamin Franklin and Bob Marley in a yearbook photo from the school.

"Believe some of what you hear and only half of what you see" was attributed to the founding father and "Love the life you live, live the life you love" was the citation for the reggae legend.

A police car was parked Friday in front of the Rebello house in Tarrytown, a well-kept ranch home.

Neighbor Jane Phelan said the twins' mother recently told her the sisters had moved out of a dormitory and into an off-campus house.

"It must be very hard on the parents and particularly on the surviving twin," her husband, Jack Phelan said.

Saudi princes lose battle to keep UK lawsuit secret

By Estelle Shirbon

LONDON (Reuters) - Two Saudi princes will not be able to keep details of an international commercial dispute a secret, a British court ruled on Thursday, despite lawyers arguing that the case could damage Saudi relations with Britain and the United States.

The appeal was made by Prince Mishal bin Abdulaziz al Saud, a former defence minister, and his son Prince Abdulaziz bin Mishal, who are locked in a legal business tussle with Jordanian businessman Faisal Almhairat.

The Court of Appeal in London upheld an earlier ruling by a lower court that the case should not be heard in secret.

The sides accuse each other of misappropriating the proceeds of shares, sold in 2010 and 2011, in London-registered Fi Call Ltd which they jointly owned. Few details on the company are publicly available.

Almhairat also alleges the young prince was guilty of wrongdoing in what have been only been referred to as the "Beirut" and "Nairobi" transactions, while he says Prince Mishal is involved in some matters relevant to the dispute.

But if details of the deals were made public in open court, lawyers for the princes argued, Prince Abdulaziz would be "at risk of serious personal injury or death from reprisals", while diplomatic damage could also be done.

The princes, who reject the allegations against them as "scandalous and outrageous", had sought sovereign immunity from being sued as members of the Saudi king's household - Prince Mishal is one of King Abdullah's many brothers.

The Court of Appeal dismissed that argument on Wednesday.

Two newspapers, the Financial Times and the Guardian, went to court in December arguing there was no reason why a case initiated by the princes should not be heard in public according to Britain's fundamental principle of open justice.

High Court Judge Paul Morgan agreed with the newspapers in a February 13 ruling, although his judgment gave little information into what the dispute was actually about.

The princes then challenged in the Court of Appeal, but with that appeal now dismissed, documents that have previously been restricted are expected to come to light.

The case could test relations between Britain and Saudi Arabia some seven years after a corruption investigation into a huge arms deal with the kingdom was dropped because of concerns that it could harm Britain's security interests.

There was widespread criticism at the time that the real motivation for shelving the case was to protect Britain's commercial prospects in Saudi Arabia.

CoreLogic: Local Real Estate Driving Housing Recovery | Reverse ...

As the forces contributing to the real estate market?s recovery have shifted from traditional business equipment and software investments, one thing remains certain: real estate is still a local phenomenon, according to CoreLogic?s latest MarketPulse report.

Businesses emerging out of the recession accelerated investment in equipment and software, growing at a rate of 10% between the third quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2012.?

Since then, investment in these areas has dropped off, slowing to less than half that rate and rising only 4% in the first quarter of 2013.?

Currently, residential investment is picking up steam, growing 14% in the second half of 2012 compared with 3% in the second half of 2011.?

Investments in residential home building creates a significant amount of economic activity as it has averaged about 5% of GDP historically, according to data from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Although not yet quite at that level, the residential investment share of GDP is rising, notes CoreLogic. Returning to this pre-recession level relies heavily on new home sales, more so than any other residential activity.?

Residential investment is not occurring evenly throughout the U.S. but is concentrated in regions that are either recovering from the boom-bust cycle, or exhibiting strong economic fundamentals and strengthening demand, according to CoreLogic?s Chief Economist Mark Fleming, Ph.D, and Principal Economist Sam Khater.?

New home sales have been lukewarm in the first stages of the recovery, as the new home market has been competing with the available housing supply stemming from short sales and foreclosures.?

However, in the last year, CoreLogic notes this inventory of existing homes has been dwindling, giving rise to increased homeowner interest in purchasing new homes.?

?New home sales add to the economy?s capital stock and every new sale requires the acquisition and development of land, purchase of goods and materials, and utilization of labor inputs,? writes Khater.?

For example, the sale of every new home requires the equivalent of up to five full-time jobs for 12 months, he writes.

?Since new sales require local labor and material input, it has a local targeted impact on the economy,? writes Khater.

And with most new sales concentrated in harder-hit suburbs near metropolitan areas, construction activity in these regions serves as a ?much needed economic stimulus.?

Holder: Potential civil rights violations at IRS

Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, May 15, 2013, before the House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on the Justice Department. Bob Goodlatte,R-Va., wants to know more about the unwarranted targeting of Tea Party and other conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department's secret seizure of telephone records at The Associated Press. The IRS apologized Friday for what it acknowledged was "inappropriate" targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see whether they were violating their tax-exempt status. In some cases, the IRS acknowledged, agents inappropriately asked for lists of donors. WASHINGTON (AP) ? The FBI is investigating potential civil rights violations at the Internal Revenue Service after the agency acknowledged the agency had singled out conservative groups for extra scrutiny, Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday.

Other potential crimes include making false statements to authorities and violating the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in some partisan political activities, Holder said.

"I can assure you and the American people that we will take a dispassionate view of this," Holder told the House Judiciary Committee at a hearing Wednesday. "This will not be about parties, this will not be about ideological persuasions. Anybody who has broken the law will be held accountable."

But, Holder said, it will take time to determine if there was criminal wrongdoing.

Holder announced a day earlier that the Justice department had opened a criminal investigation, joining three committees in Congress that are looking into the matter. As the investigation widened, House Speaker John Boehner told reporters he had this question: "Who's going to jail over this scandal?"

"There are laws in place to prevent this type of abuse. Someone made a conscious decision to harass and to hold up these requests for tax exempt status," Boehner said. "I think we need to know who they are and whether they violated the law. Clearly someone violated the law."

Legal experts, however, said it could be difficult to prove that IRS officials or employees knowingly violated the civil rights of conservative groups. If there is a violation, the experts said, investigators can sometimes prove more easily that officials made false statements or obstructed justice in some other way.

"I think it's doubtful that any of these knuckleheads who engaged in the conduct that gave rise to this controversy knowingly believed that they were violating the law," said David H. Laufman, a former Justice Department lawyer. "But that remains to be seen. That's what investigations are for."

"It's more likely than not that," he said, "the conduct at issue here may constitute violations of IRS rules or standards or protocols or procedures but may fall short of what is necessary to constitute a criminal offense."

Even if IRS agents broke criminal laws in targeting conservative groups, investigators may have to prove they knowingly did it, a high standard, said Brian Galle, a former Justice Department lawyer who teaches law at Boston College.

"If the reason they were pursuing them was in order to punish them for their political activity, there might be a First Amendment concern there," Galle said. "On the other hand, if the reason that they were looking for tea party groups is because there had been press reports about this new group, the tea party, who was aimed primarily at getting more conservative people elected to office, then they were just responding to the evidence. It really depends on what their motives were."

Wednesday's hearing was the first of several in Congress that will focus on the issue.

The House Oversight Committee announced Wednesday that it would hold a hearing May 22, featuring Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversees tax exempt organizations, and former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman, whose five-year term ended in November.

The Senate Finance Committee announced a hearing for next Tuesday.

The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing Friday, featuring the acting IRS commissioner, Steven Miller, and the Treasury inspector general for tax administration, J. Russell George.

At Wednesday's hearing, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Lerner misled him and his staff when they asked her about complaints from conservative groups that they were being harassed by the IRS.

"I know for a fact, Lois Lerner lied to me, she lied to our personal staff, she lied to committee staff, she lied in correspondence," Jordan said.

Lerner learned about the targeting on June 29, 2011, according to a report Tuesday by the inspector general.

The report said ineffective management at the IRS allowed agents to improperly target tea party and other conservative groups for more than 18 months.

The report said that while their applications for tax exempt status languished, tea party groups were asked a host of inappropriate questions, including: Who are your donors? What are the political affiliations of officers? What issues are important to the organization, and what are your positions on those issues? Will any officers in the group run for public office? Where do you work?

The IRS started targeting groups with "Tea Party," ''Patriots" or "9/12 Project" in their applications for tax exempt status in March 2010, the inspector general's report said. By August 2010, it was part of the written criteria used to flag groups for additional scrutiny.

Colleen M. Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, said Wednesday that no union employees had been disciplined, as far as she knew. She noted that the IG's report said agents were not motivated by political bias.

Kelley told The Associated Press that low-level workers could not have specifically targeted conservative groups for long without the approval of supervisors. However, she noted, there are many levels of supervisors at the IRS.

"No processes or procedures or anything like that would ever be done just by front-line employees without any management involvement," Kelley said. "That's just not how it operates."

Also Wednesday, the IRS released a list of 179 advocacy groups that had been approved for tax-exempt status as of May 9. The list includes both seemingly conservative and progressive groups, including the Nevada County Tea Party Patriots and Progress Texas. A total of 34 included the words "tea party" in their names.

"Progress Texas and the tea party strongly disagree on the role of government," said a statement from Ed Espinoza, executive director of Progress Texas. "Yet, when we applied for tax-exempt status, Progress Texas received the same type of additional scrutiny that tea party groups are complaining about."

The IRS also pushed back against one aspect of the inspector general's report. The report said the chief counsel was briefed about conservative groups being targeted on Aug. 4, 2011.

The IRS, however, said in a statement that the meeting involved staff attorneys "several layers below" chief counsel William Wilkins.

"Wilkins did not learn about specific groups being singled out by name until earlier this year," the IRS statement said.

Amy Hillman: The Rise in Business-Analytics Degrees

You don't have to be a computer-science major to feel surrounded by terms like big data, cloud computing and algorithms. "The cloud" is a common topic of conversation, and without even trying, you regularly participate in the giving and receiving of big data. For example, each time you visit Facebook, download a game on your iPhone, or send a request to a LinkedIn contact, you are participating in the big data machine.

So, who are the people who analyze all of this data? They are business analysts, one of the fastest-growing jobs of 2013. You can find them at a variety of organizations, including Fortune 100 companies, small businesses, universities, nonprofits and government organizations.

The role of a business analyst is to aggregate data to figure out how his or her organization can leverage the data to operate more efficiently and effectively. The Harvard Business Review calls the position of business analyst or data scientist the "sexiest job of the 21st century." Business-analyst jobs are predicted to increase by 22 percent by 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unfortunately, the growth of our technologies has exceeded our supply of qualified talent. 90 percent of the world's data today has been generated in the last two years, and we can't keep up with demand. According to a recent McKinsey & Company big data report, by 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 professionals with deep analytical skills, as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.

To keep up with the demand and fill the talent void, colleges and universities are developing innovative master's degrees in business analytics that are ideal for recent undergraduates with a quantitative background (i.e. science, technology, engineering, math and business degrees). Having a master's degree has been shown to improve students' chances of securing a job, with the benefits higher for those who secure a master's degree over a bachelor's degree alone.

Recently, higher-education consulting firm Eduvantis reported that in the past three years there have been more than 15 new master's-level degree programs centered on data analytics launched in North America. This type of degree is a focused, business-meets-analytics program that can be completed in one year or less (called a Master of Science in Business Analytics or MS-BA). At this time, only a handful of universities offer an MS-BA degree.

Many of the programs offer a focus on experiential learning, and students work on actual companies' business problems to gain real-world experience. Further, the curriculum is often designed around skills companies specifically need in this area. Students in these programs typically require zero to two years of work experience.

For those who are more seasoned working professionals, some MBA programs offer specializations in information systems management, which can help with business analytics. Often, part-time MBA programs are available, so students can continue to work. In fact, some large corporations even pay for top employees to participate in these programs.

No matter which path students or professionals decide to take, obtaining a master's degree in the high-growth field of information systems or specifically business analytics has big benefits. For the individual, a master's degree in this field offers better credentials when pursuing higher-level roles in a company and more experience relevant to this exciting time of technological growth. These graduates are also helping fill the talent gap created by the changing demands of big data.

Ex-Gov. Huntsman launching talk show on SiriusXM

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Former Republican Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a 2012 presidential candidate, is helping launch a new monthly radio talk show on SiriusXM satellite radio aimed at promoting bipartisan politics.

The former U.S. ambassador to China and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, will appear Wednesday on the inaugural edition of the call-in show on Sirius XM Radio ? "No Labels Radio: A Town Hall with America."

Manchin said the show, an hour-long program billed as a "town hall" discussion, "will give Americans the opportunity to hear just the facts from our elected officials."

Manchin is the honorary co-chairman of a coalition of 68 members of Congress called "No Labels Problem Solvers." Members include Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson, of Utah, and Republican Sen. Dean Heller, of Nevada.

Huntsman made a brief run for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. In a statement released by SiriusXM, Huntsman said the partnership between Sirius XM Radio Inc. and No Labels is an important step toward a national dialogue about common sense solutions and problem solving.

Since his departure from the presidential race in January 2012, Huntsman has been giving speeches and interviews around the country. He signed on with the No Labels organization in January, and announced his support for same-sex marriage in February.

Despite speculation that he may run for president again, Huntsman has said it's too early to discuss whether he'd launch another campaign in 2016.

Passenger car drivers are more likely to die in crashes with SUVs, regardless of crash ratings

May 14, 2013 ? Most consumers who are shopping for a new car depend on good crash safety ratings as an indicator of how well the car will perform in a crash. But a new University at Buffalo study of crashes involving cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) has found those crash ratings are a lot less relevant than vehicle type.

The study is being presented May 16 at the annual meeting of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine in Atlanta.

In head-on collisions between passenger cars and SUVs, the UB researchers found that drivers in passenger cars were nearly 10 times more likely to die if the SUV involved had a better crash rating. Drivers of passenger cars were more than four times more likely to die even if the passenger car had a better crash rating than the SUV.

"When two vehicles are involved in a crash, the overwhelming majority of fatalities occur in the smaller and lighter of the two vehicles," says Dietrich Jehle, MD, UB professor of emergency medicine at Erie County Medical Center and first author.

"But even when the two vehicles are of similar weights, outcomes are still better in the SUVs," he says, "because in frontal crashes, SUVs tend to ride over shorter passenger vehicles, due to bumper mismatch, crushing the occupant of the passenger car."

When crash ratings were not considered, the odds of death for drivers in passenger cars were more than seven times higher than SUV drivers in all head-on crashes. In crashes involving two passenger cars, a lower car safety rating was associated with a 1.28 times higher risk of death for the driver and a driver was 1.22 times more likely to die in a head-on crash for each point lower in the crash rating.

The UB researchers conducted the retrospective study on severe head-on motor vehicle crashes in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) database between 1995 and 2010. The database includes all motor vehicle crashes that resulted in a death within 30 days and includes 83,521 vehicles involved in head-on crashes.

"Along with price and fuel efficiency, car safety ratings are one of the things that consumers rely on when shopping for an automobile," says Jehle. These ratings, from one to five stars, are based on data from frontal, side barrier and side pole crashes that compare vehicles of similar type, size and weight. The one to five star safety rating system was created in 1978 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Jehle notes that after manufacturers addressed the roll-over problem with SUVs that plagued these vehicles in the 1980s and 1990s, rollover crashes are now much less common in SUVs.

"Currently, the larger SUVs are some of the safest cars on the roadways with fewer rollovers and outstanding outcomes in frontal crashes with passenger vehicles," he says.

Jehle says that prior studies on frontal crashes have found that compared to passenger cars with a 5-star crash rating, cars with a rating from one to four stars have a 7-36% increase in driver death rates.

"Passenger vehicles with excellent safety ratings may provide a false degree of confidence to the buyer regarding the relative safety of these vehicles as demonstrated by our findings," says Jehle. "Consumers should take into consideration the increased safety of SUVs in head-on crashes with passenger vehicles when purchasing a car."

Co-authors with Jehle, all from UB, are: Albert Arslan and Chirag Doshi, MD candidates in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; Joseph Consiglio, data manager/statistician for the UB Department of Emergency Medicine and a graduate student in the Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health and Health Professions; Juliana Wilson DO, a post-doctoral scholar in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Christine DeSanno DO, a resident in the UB Department of Emergency Medicine.

Jim DeMint stands by controversial immigration study

The Fine Print

Former Sen. Jim DeMint (R ? S.C.) is standing by the controversial Heritage Foundation study that put a $6.3 trillion price tag on the Senate immigration bill, saying: ?There?s no doubt that these numbers are real.?

He also says he has no regrets about leaving the Senate to become president of the Heritage Foundation, recalling his recent years in the Senate as similar to ?being on a treadmill going nowhere.?

?I?m at a place now at Heritage where I can have more impact on public policy than I could as a United States senator,? says DeMint.

As the Senate debates an immigration bill, DeMint is at the center of a dispute at Heritage. The conservative policy group released a report last week citing the $6.3 billion cost of the bill over 50 years, which many on both sides of the aisle have rebuked as overblown. The report faced further scrutiny after it was discovered that its co-author, Jason Richwine, has previously made controversial arguments based on race.

While Richwine has since resigned from the Heritage Foundation, and the organization has distanced itself from his previous writings, DeMint is not backing away from the report?s findings.

?The towering cost of moving forward this way is something everyone should stop and think, ?Okay, let's check the numbers out, see if they're real,?? DeMint says. ?I think they're irrefutable. I have done a lot of research in my life, there's no doubt that these numbers are real.?

DeMint discounts the argument made by supporters of the legislation that there will be long-term benefit to the U.S. economy.

?Some are suggesting that just having these additional workers is going to improve the economy and help everyone? There is no way over a fifty year period that this is going to improve the economy to a point that actually creates a benefit to American taxpayers,? he says.

DeMint contends that many of the estimated 10-12 million people to whom the bill would extend a path to citizenship will rely on government services more than they contribute in taxes.

?They take out over $9 trillion, they put in around $3 [trillion], but the net is a cost to taxpayers of $6.3 [trillion],? DeMint says.

While DeMint says the Heritage Foundation is supportive of the concept of immigration reform, he characterizes the current compromise as ?blanket amnesty.?

?A true immigration reform would create a lot of benefits for America?but to get those benefits we don't have to offer this blanket amnesty for those who came here unlawfully,? he says. ?It?s not fair to the 4 million people all around the world waiting to come here lawfully, costs way too much, and will make problems worse.?

For more of the interview with DeMint, and to hear how this issue has strained his relationship with Sen. Marco Rubio (R ? Fl.), check out this episode of The Fine Print.

ABC's Eric Wray, Betsy Klein, Alexandra Dukakis, Chris Carlson, and John Knott contributed to this episode.
