South Texas drug arrests reveal underground bunker

McALLEN, Texas -

Police say the seizure of about 2,000 pounds of marijuana has led investigators to an unusual find: an underground drug bunker built beneath the foundation of a South Texas home.

The Monitor of McAllen reports that the bunker was discovered Wednesday when police arrested two men on drug charges.

Inside the home, police found the men had broken through the house's foundation and dug underground rooms beneath, leaving little to hold up the foundation.

McAllen police Chief Victor Rodriguez says it appears the smuggling group used the bunker to try to hide the smell of the drugs and to also have room in which to hold people.

In the bunker, police found dozens of marijuana bundles? each marked with a large "Z," the mark of Mexico's Zetas drug cartel.
