Breaking Down Barriers: Using Brand and Fundraising to Build Collaboration and Partnerships

In this session, Nathalie, Jennifer and Sasha will discuss and explore how to maximize the potential impact of organizations and strengthen leadership. Using RefugePoint?s re-branding and? fundraising strategies as a case in point, they will reflect on how these various approaches have improved results and forged important alliances with other organizations and individual partners.

Nathalie Laidler-Kylander is a Lecturer in Public Policy and Senior Research Fellow at the Hauser Center. Nathalie also currently teaches at the Fletcher School, Tufts University and the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai. Nathalie?s prior work experience includes several senior marketing positions in both the private and public sectors. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry, an MBA from Harvard Business School and a PhD from the Fletcher School. Nathalie has written numerous case studies in the fields of International Marketing and Nonprofit Branding and has published a case book on Nonprofit Brands as well as several articles on Nonprofit Brand Equity. Her recent research interests continue to focus on the role of nonprofit brands and the emergence of the forth sector. Nathalie lives in Hingham, MA with her husband and four children.

Jennifer McCrea is Director of the Course in Exponential Fundraising and Senior Research Fellow at the Hauser Center. For the past 25 years, Jennifer McCrea has helped philanthropists, board members and nonprofit leaders think more creatively and strategically about ways in which to align resource mobilization and collaborative partnerships to address some of the most profound needs on the planet. Jennifer is also a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute, serves as an advisory board member of Berklee College City Music Program and The Blue School, and is a co-founder and board member of the Quincy Jones MusiQ Consortium. Jennifer currently co-leads the Business Leadership Council (BLC) for a Generation Born HIV Free. Jennifer was at Case Western Reserve University and at Washington University in St. Louis during their multi-billion dollar campaign. She was also Vice President for Development at Dickinson College.? She has a BA from Allegheny College and a Master?s in Nonprofit Management from Case Western Reserve University.

Sasha Chanoff is the founder of RefugePoint, an organization that works to provide lasting solutions for the world?s most vulnerable refugees. Prior to founding RefugePoint, Sasha consulted with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and worked with the International Organization for Migration throughout Africa, identifying refugees in danger, undertaking rescue missions, and working on refugee protection issues with the US, Canadian, Australian and other governments. He has appeared on 60 Minutes as well as in other national and international TV, radio and print media outlets. Chanoff has received social entrepreneurship fellowships from Ashoka, the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, and Echoing Green, and is a recipient of the Charles Bronfman Humanitarian Prize. He serves on the Steering Committee of New England International Donors, and is a human rights advisor to a private foundation.

The Frontline with Faculty Series is a venue for Harvard faculty affiliated with the Hauser Center to share their work and research with faculty colleagues, as well as students in an informal setting that will allow for spirited discussion, debate and exchange. The seminars link faculty experts from Harvard Schools and beyond on a wide range of topics.? The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University seeks to expand understanding and accelerate critical thinking about civil society among scholars, practitioners, policy makers and the general public, by encouraging scholarship, developing curriculum, fostering mutual learning between academics and practitioners, and shaping policies that enhance the sector and its role in society.
