Auto union wants to organize SE plants as survival tool

The United Auto Workers union is coming after ?transplant? auto plants in the Southeast. But the union doesn?t appear to be targeting BMW Manufacturing Co. in its organizing efforts despite the company?s? strong relationshi with unions in Germany.

The UAW has attempted to interest BMW workers in organizing previously. It hasn?t succeeded. And South Carolina is notoriously unwelcoming to any union activity. Gov. Nikki Haley has basically said the state doesn?t want unions here.

Maybe there are easier locations to go after first. A report by Reuters indicated that Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG are considered softer targets than the Japanese and South Korean firms ? and maybe easier than BMW.

The question is why would workers go with a union. Most of the auto jobs lost in the United States in the past three years have been at unionized plants.

But the effort may be key to the UAW?s survival as a force in the labor market, experts say.
