Ex-NY Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger dies

NEW YORK (AP) ? Few moments in American journalism loom larger than the one that came in 1971, when New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger had to decide whether to defy a president, and risk a potential criminal charge, by publishing a classified Defense Department history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

His choice, to publish the Pentagon Papers and then fight the Nixon administration's subsequent attempt to muzzle the story, cemented Sulzberger's place as a First Amendment giant ? a role being celebrated after he died Saturday at age 86.

The former publisher, who led the Times to new levels of influence and profit while standing up for press freedom, died at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness, his family announced.

During his three-decade tenure, Sulzberger's newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes while he went about transforming the family business from perpetually shaky to the muscular media behemoth it was when he retired.

Weekday circulation climbed from 714,000 when Sulzberger became publisher in 1963 to 1.1 million when he stepped down as publisher in 1992. Over the same period, the annual revenues of the Times' corporate parent rose from $100 million to $1.7 billion.

Yet it was Sulzberger's positions on editorial independence that made him a hero of the profession, like when he rejected his own lawyers' warnings that even reading the Pentagon Papers, let alone publishing them, constituted a crime.

Sulzberger, who went by the nickname "Punch" and served with the Marine Corps, privately worried that he had doomed the newspaper but gave interviews saying the Times wouldn't allow the U.S. government to cover up its mistakes under the guise of national security.

"That is a wonderful way, if you've got egg on your face, to prevent anybody from knowing it: Stamp it SECRET and put it away," he said.

"Punch, the old Marine captain who never backed down from a fight, was an absolutely fierce defender of the freedom of the press," his son, and current Times publisher, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., said in a statement.

Sulzberger was the only grandson of Adolph S. Ochs (pronounced ox), the son of Bavarian immigrants who took over the Times in 1896 and built it into the nation's most influential newspaper.

The family retains control to this day, holding a special class of shares that give them more powerful voting rights than other stockholders.

Power was thrust on Sulzberger at the age of 37 after the sudden death of his brother-in-law in 1963. He had been in the Times executive suite for eight years in a role he later described as "vice president in charge of nothing."

But Sulzberger directed the Times' evolution from an encyclopedic paper of record to a more reader-friendly product that reached into the suburbs and across the nation.

Under his watch, the Times started a national edition, bought its first color presses, and introduced ? to the chagrin of some hard-news purists ? popular and lucrative sections covering topics such as food and entertainment.

"You forget the unbelievable outrage that greeted those sections. But in retrospect it was the right decision both editorially and economically," said Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

In 1992, Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's job to his son but remained chairman of The New York Times Co. Sulzberger retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997. His son then was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

Reacting to news of Sulzberger's death Saturday, former Times executive editor Joseph Lelyveld said that his business success was matched by integrity in the newsroom.

"As an editor, you knew that if you went to the publisher and sought his support on an issue that you deemed to be of high importance, you could pretty much count on getting it. He knew how to back his people," Lelyveld said.

President Barack Obama said Sulzberger was "a firm believer in the importance of a free and independent press ? one that isn't afraid to seek the truth, hold those in power accountable, and tell the stories that need to be told."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he "changed the course of American history with his journalistic decisions."

Significant free-press and free-speech precedents were established during Sulzberger's years as publisher, most notably the Times vs. Sullivan case. It resulted in a landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that shielded the press from libel lawsuits by public officials unless they could prove actual malice.

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level," said Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt. "The Associated Press benefited from his wisdom, both during his years on the board of directors and his thoughtful engagement in the years that followed."

In 1971, the Times led the First Amendment fight to keep the government from suppressing the Pentagon Papers.

Sulzberger read more than 7,000 pages of the documents and presided over a dramatic internal debate before deciding to publish. Then, he resisted a demand by Attorney General John Mitchell that the paper halt the series after two installments.

A federal judge delayed publication of additional installments, but in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court eventually sided with the Times and The Washington Post, and allowed the series to continue.

"There were those that thought some kind of deal or reconciliation with the government should have been sought," said First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams, who represented the Times in the court case. "It was Punch Sulzberger who made the decision to resist the government's effort. In making that decision he set in motion a litigation which not only preserved but protected the First Amendment for generations."

In their book "The Trust," a history of the Ochs-Sulzberger family and its stewardship of the paper, Susan E. Tifft and Alex S. Jones cited Sulzberger's "common sense and unerring instincts."

In an interview in 1990 with New York magazine, Sulzberger was typically candid about the paper's readership.

"We're not New York's hometown newspaper," he said. "We're read on Park Avenue, but we don't do well in Chinatown or the east Bronx. We have to approach journalism differently than, say, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, where you try to blanket the community."

Sulzberger was born in New York City on Feb. 5, 1926, the only son of Arthur Hays Sulzberger and his wife, Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, Adolph's only child. One of his three sisters was named Judy, and from early on he was known as "Punch," from the puppet characters Punch and Judy.

Sulzberger's grandfather led the paper until his death in 1935, when he was followed by Sulzberger's father, who remained at the helm until he retired in 1961.

Except for a year at The Milwaukee Journal, 1953-54, the younger Sulzberger spent his entire career at the family paper after graduating from Columbia College in 1951. He worked in European bureaus for a time and was back in New York by 1955, but found he had little to do.

At various times, Sulzberger was a director or chairman of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, American Newspaper Publishers Association and American Press Institute. He was a director of The Associated Press from 1975 to 1984.

Sulzberger married Barbara Grant in 1948, and the couple had two children, Arthur Jr. and Karen. After a divorce in 1956, Sulzberger married Carol Fox. The couple had a daughter, Cynthia, and Sulzberger adopted Fox's daughter from a previous marriage, Cathy.

Carol Sulzberger died in 1995. The following year, Sulzberger married Allison Cowles, the widow of William H. Cowles 3rd, who was the president and publisher of The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle of Spokane, Wash. She died in 2010.

Fox News airs footage of man shooting self in head

A carjacking in Arizona ended when the suspect shot himself in the head today as footage of the incident was broadcast live on Fox News Channel.

A chopper covered the high-speed chase along I-10 outside Phoenix. Initial reports indicated that a victim may have remained in the stolen car.

Chopper video showed the vehicle zooming along Arizona's wide open highway, flashing past cars and trucks, switching lanes as it weaved through traffic, often speeding along the shoulder of the road. The camera from the chopper captured the moment the chase ended with a male stumbling out of a red SUV into a grassy area. He reached into his waistband and pulled a handgun. He then shot himself in the head.

Fox cut away from the shot soon after the man shot himself and went to commercial break.

Following the break anchor Shepard Smith apologized for airing the shooting. He said the feed was on a five second delay, but they failed to cut it off in time.

"We really messed up and we're all very sorry," he said. "That didn't belong on TV... I personally apologize to you that it happened."

"It's insensitive and it's wrong," he said of airing the shooting.

(AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's use of a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb to convey a message over Iran's disputed nuclear program follows in a long and storied tradition of leaders and diplomats using props to make their points at the United Nations. Here are a few memorable examples:

US shows embassy bug to expose Soviets

In May 1960, U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge accused the Soviets of espionage, producing before the Security Council a wooden Great Seal of the United States which had been presented by a group of Russian citizens at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Lodge then extracted a tiny microphone out of the eagle's beak with a pair of tweezers, and said dozens of listening devices had been found in U.S. embassies in communist bloc countries. "From what plays were these props taken and when will it open?" the Soviet delegate responded. Earlier that month, the Soviet Union had shot down an American U-2 spy plane over Russia.

Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe

In October 1960, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev banged his shoe as he interrupted a Philippine delegate making accusations of Soviet imperialism in Eastern Europe. Khrushchev's granddaughter later recalled the Soviet leader had new tight shoes on, which he had taken off when he took his seat. He had started by banging his fists to protest what the Filipino was saying, until his watch fell off. As he went to pick it up, Khrushchev caught sight of his shoes and decided to bang one of them instead. Amid shouting and jeering from Eastern bloc delegates, the assembly president adjourned the meeting, banging his gavel so hard it broke.

Cuban missile crisis photos

During the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson made something of a TV-age breakthrough when he presented to the Security Council photo evidence of a Soviet missile buildup. Stevenson demanded Soviet representative Valerian Zorin answer whether missiles were being installed, memorably adding he was prepared to wait "until hell freezes over" for the response. Zorin, unprepared for so direct a question, could only reply: "I am not in an American courtroom, sir. ... You will have your answer in due course." Stevenson then unveiled blowups of black-and-white aerial photos of Soviet missile installations in Cuba, large enough to make an impression on the TV audience.

Yasser Arafat brings his gun to the U.N.

When Yasser Arafat spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in 1974, Israel was incensed. But for the Palestinian Liberation Organization leader it represented recognition for their struggle for a Palestinian state. To emphasize his revolutionary credentials, Arafat appeared wearing his gun belt and holster, reluctantly removing his pistol before mounting the rostrum. He told the world body, "Today, I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom-fighter's gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

On Iraq war path, Powell shows vial of 'anthrax'

In a speech he would regret, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Feb. 5, 2003, unleashed an 80-minute avalanche of allegations that built the case for war against Iraq. Before a hushed Security Council chamber, Powell played intercepted conversations, showed reconnaissance photos of Iraqi sites, and brought out a replica vial of "anthrax." He accused Iraq of hiding chemical and biological weapons and reviving their nuclear bomb project. He said it posed a grave threat to the world. After the invasion of Iraq, it emerged that reports of Saddam Hussein's WMD program were false.

Bolivia's Morales chews a coca leaf

Bolivian President Evo Morales produced a coca leaf during a March 2009 meeting of the U.N. Committee on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna and proceeded to chew it. "This is a coca leaf. This is not cocaine," said Morales, a former coca farmer, as he argued for its legalization. He told delegates he'd chewed coca intensely for 10 years when he was a farmer and it hadn't diminished his health or abilities. "If I was incapable, I would not be president," he said.

Obama, Romney woo military in battleground state Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH/SPRINGFIELD, Virginia (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney battled to capture the military vote in Virginia on Thursday as they tried to squeeze out an advantage in one of the most tightly contested swing states ahead of the November 6 election.

Speaking in the military town of Virginia Beach, Obama called for a new "economic patriotism" to help middle-income voters whose support his campaign is targeting.

Romney spoke at an American Legion hall a few miles from the Pentagon and blamed Obama for $1.2 trillion in potential defense cuts that could bring heavy job losses to the Virginia suburbs of Washington, where the Democrat is popular.

The Pentagon is home to the nation's military command.

Obama's economic patriotism focus was a new angle in his campaign stump speech and was likely aimed at the state's large population of veterans. The message linked to Obama's theme that he - and not Romney - is promoting tax policies and social programs that support the middle class.

"During campaign season you always hear a lot about patriotism. Well, you know what? It's time for a new economic patriotism. An economic patriotism rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong and thriving middle class," Obama told a crowd of some 7,000 in Virginia Beach.

Veterans also featured in a new Obama campaign ad released on Thursday that played Romney's voice from his "47 percent" video over images of working Americans, ex-military members and a young family in a poor, rural setting. No other voices appear in the ad.

Romney describes 47 percent of the electorate in the secretly recorded video as "victims" reliant on federal aid.

Polls show the clip has damaged voters' perception of Romney, though most people will still decide who to vote for based on economic issues. Nationally, Obama is ahead of Romney by 49-42 percent, according a Reuters/Ipsos daily online poll.

As in several other swing states, Obama has opened up a slight lead in the polls in Virginia, which he won in the 2008 election to become the first Democratic presidential candidate to take the state in decades.

BLAME FOR DEFENSE CUTS

Bringing the fight to the suburbs of Washington where Obama is well-liked, Romney blamed the incumbent for potential defense cuts that could kick in early next year.

Known as "sequestration," the mandatory cuts in defense and other government spending were agreed upon by the White House and Republicans in Congress last year in a deal to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.

"It's a strange proposal in the first place. It's even stranger that it's being put in place," Romney told a crowd at the American Legion in Springfield, Virginia.

The obligatory cuts are due to begin in January if the two parties in Congress cannot agree on budget savings.

"How in the world as commander-in-chief you can stand by as we shrink our military commitment financially is something I don't understand, and I will reverse it," Romney said.

Congressional Republicans, including vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan, approved the sequestration deal but Romney hopes to use it as evidence that Obama is weak on national security and uncaring about job losses.

Romney also took shots at Obama over second-quarter gross domestic product numbers that were revised downward on Thursday.

The Republican compared Russia's growth to that of the United States, which saw 1.3 percent growth in the second quarter, and said it was evidence the economy is a national security issue.

"1.3 percent versus Russia at 4 percent. China at 7 to 8 percent," Romney said. "We're at 1.3 percent. This is unacceptable. It is not working," he said in Springfield.

"This is the result of policies that have not reignited our economy," Romney said Thursday evening at a fundraiser in Washington. "I think by the end of a second Barack Obama term you'd be roughly $20 trillion in debt. ... This has been a presidency that has not worked."

"The entire world is watching what's happening here and wondering which way we're gonna go. Whether we're going to get serious about our challenges or just kick them down the road," Romney told supporters.

Obama's campaign released a two-minute television advertisement featuring the president talking directly to the camera about his record and his plans for a second term.

"When I took office, we were losing nearly eight hundred thousand jobs a month, and were mired in Iraq," Obama says in the ad. "Today, I believe that as a nation we are moving forward again. But we have much more to do to get folks back to work and make the middle class secure again."

In a reminder of how soon Election Day is, early voting in person began in swing state Iowa.

Online video streaming: Televisions overtake PCs for the first time

Online Video Streaming

Tech companies? vision of transforming the television set into yet another device that streams content from the Internet may finally be becoming a reality. The NPD Group on Wednesday reported that televisions are now the ?primary screen for viewing paid and free video streamed from the Web,? beating out personal computers for the first time. According to NPD?s latest survey, 45% of American consumers are using the television as their primary screen for watching online video content, while just 31% of consumers said they primarily used their PCs to watch online content.?

These numbers are an almost perfect reversal from a year ago when NPD found that 48% of American consumers primarily used PCs for online videos while just 33% used televisions.?Netflix (NFLX) is unsurprisingly the most popular application that?s driving users to watch more online video on their televisions, with NPD reporting that ?of those watching online video on the TV, 40 percent use their connected TVs to stream video via Netflix, 12 percent access HuluPlus, and 4 percent connect to Vudu.?

NPD?s full press release follows below.

NPD Group: TVs Overtake PCs as the Primary Screen for Home Viewing of Online Video

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, September 26, 2012?? According to?The NPD Group, a leading market research company, over the past year, the number of consumers reporting that the TV is their primary screen for viewing paid and free video streamed from the Web has risen from 33 percent to 45 percent. During the same period, consumers who used a PC as the primary screen for viewing over-the-top (OTT) streamed-video content declined from 48 percent to 31 percent. This shift not only reflects a strong consumer preference for watching TV and movies on big screen TVs, but also coincides with the rapid adoption of Internet-connectible TVs.

NPD?s recent ?Digital Video Outlook? report reveals that home installation of millions of Internet-connected TVs is changing the way that consumers access and view streaming video. As of the second quarter (Q2) of 2012, 12 percent of the installed base of consumer TVs in the U.S. were connected TVs, totaling more than 29 million devices. Approximately 10 percent of U.S. consumer households currently own at least one connected TV. NPD research conducted over the past year has found that 43 percent of connected TV users accessed online entertainment directly from their TVs, including online video, music, and cloud services.

?The growth in connected TVs is another sign that online video is maturing,? said Russ Crupnick, senior vice president of industry analysis for The NPD Group. ?Streaming video has moved from the dorm room to the living room; and, as more households obtain and connect TVs to the Web, we predict increased trial and engagement for video distribution services.?

Netflix Watch Instantly is the dominant application for Web-to-TV video. Of those viewing online video on the TV, 40 percent use their connected TVs to stream video via Netflix, 12 percent access HuluPlus, and 4 percent connect to Vudu. Connected TVs, which offer direct access to these and other popular online video services via TV apps, represent a convenient alternative to PCs, or the use of other Internet-connected peripheral devices.

NPD?s study also found that nearly one in five connected-TV installations resulted in consumers no longer using peripheral devices, such as streaming media players, video game consoles, and Blu-ray Disc players, to access streaming video on the TV. This decline in usage could impact the usage models and utility of peripheral devices.

Data note: NPD?s ?Digital Video Outlook? report is based on data collected from multiple sources, including two electronic surveys. The quarterly survey includes approximately 1,200 U.S. broadband households. Survey data was weighted to represent U.S. population (age 13 and older) and tested for statistical significance at the 95 percent confidence level. The semi-annual survey includes approximately 10,000 respondents. Data from this survey has a 97% level of confidence, with a +/- 0.7% margin of error.

Athletic director Tom Osborne retiring at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) ? Tom Osborne, who put together one of the most successful coaching runs in college football history before serving in Congress and taking the reins as Nebraska's athletic director five years ago, is retiring.

The 75-year-old Osborne announced at a news conference Wednesday that he would step down Jan. 1, though he will stay for an additional six months to assist in the transition to a new athletic director.

"At some point, whether you're able to function or not, just the perception that you're getting old can get in the way," Osborne said. "I don't want to be one of those guys everybody is walking around wringing their hands trying to figure out what are we going to do with him? That happens sometimes."

Osborne, who had double-bypass heart surgery in 1985, said he has no health issues that led to his decision.

"I'm probably healthier today than when I was a member of Congress. That takes a big toll on you," he said.

Basketball coach Tim Miles tweeted news of Osborne's retirement announcement shortly before Osborne spoke to reporters. Miles said Osborne leaves "an unreal legacy" at Nebraska.

Associate athletic director Jamie Williams, who played tight end for Osborne in the early 1980s, said, "They don't make a lot of Tom Osbornes. There aren't a lot of living legends left that you can rub elbows with every day. For him to say he's going off to pasture, I told him we have more dragons to slay. Sometimes fishing becomes more important."

Osborne said he told chancellor Harvey Perlman in August that he planned to retire after the football season. Perlman said a search firm had been hired to identify candidates to succeed Osborne, and that he has already interviewed some of them.

"The decision will be his," Osborne said, referring to Perlman. "I'll support him any way I can."

Besides the success his Cornhuskers teams enjoyed from 1973-1997, Osborne served in Congress and lost a gubernatorial bid before returning to the university in 2007 to take over the athletic department. He oversaw the rebuilding of the football program he loves and shepherded the school's move from the Big 12 to the Big Ten.

Under Osborne's watch, the athletic department has built a new basketball practice facility and entered into a public-private partnership to build a 16,000-seat basketball arena in downtown Lincoln that will open for the 2013-14 season. He also oversaw an expansion project that will increase Memorial Stadium's capacity to more than 90,000 next year.

Perlman had asked Osborne to take over the athletic department at a time of turmoil. The football program was struggling under Bill Callahan, and staff morale was low under athletic director Steve Pederson.

Osborne recalled Wednesday that when he first met with athletic department executives, a few of them told him they were receiving counseling because of stress. Several staff members either had quit or were considering quitting.

"I wouldn't say things were awful," Osborne said, "but things were a little fragmented. Some people had quit and some people were thinking about quitting. People pulled together very quickly. Hopefully, it has worked out well."

Osborne fired Callahan after the 2007 season and hired Bo Pelini, who made the Huskers competitive again and led them to the Big 12 championship game in 2009 and 2010. Among Osborne's other key personnel moves: hiring Miles from Colorado State last March to coach the men's basketball program and hiring former major-leaguer Darin Erstad in 2010 to coach baseball at his alma mater.

Osborne is most widely known for his coaching. Every one of his 25 teams won at least nine games, and three of his last four teams won national championships. He retired with a career record of 255-49-3, an .836 winning percentage that ranked fifth all-time among Division I coaches, and 13 conference titles. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998, the year after he retired.

Osborne turned to politics after his coaching days. By overwhelming margins, voters in the western Nebraska district elected him to the House of Representatives in 2000, 2002 and 2004. In perhaps the greatest upset in Nebraska political history, Osborne lost to incumbent Dave Heineman in the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary.

Osborne finished his third term after the crushing defeat, then returned to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he taught classes in leadership and business ethics before taking the reins of the athletic department.

"I feel we're well positioned," Osborne said. "We worked hard on the culture and part of that has not just been internal. We've tried to link this place with the former players. ... Whatever we've accomplished couldn't happen if we didn't have a united fan base. It would be hard to find one equal to our fans around the country. It allows a program in a state of 1.8 million to be competitive with programs in densely populated areas."

Perlman praised Osborne for stabilizing the athletic department.

"There are people you can admire from a distance and then when you get up close you see all the warts," he said. "That's not been my experience with Tom. It's been fun to interview head coaches with him and to see the national respect and awe they have of his reputation."

Williams said he hoped Osborne would stay involved in Nebraska athletics long after the new athletic director is hired.

"But at some point," Williams said, "he has to do more fishing."

Osborne joked that his wife approved of his decision.

"It leaves me with a great deal of fear and trepidation," he said with a smile, "because she keeps reminding me the garage hasn't been cleaned in three years and I can see a whole list of things popping up."

Starting today, you will also be able to easily download the videos you previously uploaded to YouTube. NY state senator loses election after backing gay marriage

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Republican state senator whose vote was crucial to legalizing gay marriage in New York has lost his primary election while a Senate colleague who also broke with the party's stance against same-sex unions narrowly escaped defeat.

Senators Roy McDonald and Stephen Saland were among four New York Senate Republicans to cast key votes last year to make New York the most populous U.S. state to allow homosexual marriages. After a count of absentee ballots, McDonald was determined to have lost his race while Saland narrowly won in September 13 primary elections.

Mark Grisanti, another Republican senator who backed the gay marriage measure, which passed New York's Republican-controlled Senate on a 33-29 vote in June 2011, won his primary race by a clear margin. A fourth senator who supported the bill was not seeking re-election.

McDonald lost the Republican nomination in the 43rd District to Kathy Marchione, the Saratoga County clerk, in a contest that frequently touched on the issue of gay marriage.

Although the results are yet to be certified, Marchione had a lead of about 110 votes after a final count of absentee ballots, according to her campaign and The Saratogian newspaper. About 50 votes still were awaiting adjudication by a judge.

"Senator McDonald's vote on marriage was certainly on the minds of voters but they took even greater issue with the fact that he was telling people he would vote a certain way up to a week prior and then voted differently," said Ken Girardin, a spokesman for the Marchione campaign.

A McDonald spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.

Saland of Poughkeepsie and Grisanti of Buffalo have retained their party's support following the primaries.

Saland's victory was not secured until Monday after a final tally of absentee ballots gave him a lead of a little more than 100 votes.

The New York primary races were being closely watched as a measure of the tolerance Republican voters might have for candidates who deviate from the official party line, which defines marriage as being between "one man and one woman."

Lawmakers in Rhode Island, Delaware and elsewhere are expected to weigh gay marriage legislation next year and some Republican backing could be needed to pass those measures.

And this November, voters in four states - Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington - will decide ballot initiatives on the issue. Same-sex marriage has been legalized in seven states and the District of Columbia.

But the outcomes of the New York primaries were close enough that both opponents and supporters of same-sex marriage were able to find encouragement in the results on Tuesday.

Jason McGuire, the executive director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, an evangelical Christian organization that lobbies against same-sex marriage, said Marchione's victory and even Saland's narrow win should be seen as a warning to Republican legislators tempted to "go rogue," as he put it.

"The fact that she came from behind with so little support shows that no amount of activist dollars can protect you from an angry electorate," he said of Marchione's victory.

But Lynn Faria, the interim executive director of Empire State Pride Agenda, which has lobbied in support of same-sex marriage, said Marchione's narrow win showed many Republicans are willing to back candidates who support gay unions.

"Now that we finally know the unofficial results of our state's primary elections, even some among the most conservative of New York voters have sent a clear message that they will support elected officials who stood on the right side of history in June 2011," she said in a statement. Milan coach Allegri given 1-match ban

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:01 a.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

MILAN (AP) -AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has been handed a one-match ban for insulting the referee at the end of Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Udinese, the Italian league announced Monday.

"I'm surprised, I didn't do anything," Allegri said after learning of the ban. Milan is planning an urgent appeal.

Milan finished the game with nine men after both Cristian Zapata and Kevin-Prince Boateng were sent off in a woeful afternoon for the Rossoneri.

The players, who were both dismissed after two bookings, have been banned for one match.

Meanwhile, Sampdoria's Maxi Lopez has been handed a two-match suspension "for kicking the door of the referees' changing room and shouting insults at them."

Lopez could also face a fine after the matter was referred to the Italian Football Federation.

'Meteor' sightings made across UK

Experts said the meteors could be space junk, possibly satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the night sky, thought to be meteors or "space junk"

Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east.

The lights were seen as far north as Caithness in Scotland as well as in Wales and Norfolk in East Anglia.

Experts said the meteors could be satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

The lights have also been reported in the Midlands, parts of north-east England and in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Brian Guthrie in Grangemouth near Edinburgh, who watched the objects pass through the sky, said it appeared to be something "pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere".

"I've seen shooting stars and meteor showers before, but this was much larger and much more colourful."

Coastguards in the Shetland Islands received what they believe is Scotland's most northerly sighting of the meteor at 23:00 BST.

They were called by a member of the public who had seen a bright white light in the sky over the Stacks of Duncansby in Caithness.

'Yellow and orange ball'

One person who contacted the BBC said it was "kind of a mass of light, gold light. Everything moving in unison".

"It wasn't diverging... I thought it was a plane at first. It was quite low on the horizon and moving much slower than I'd expect to see a shooting star, but it was amazing."

Another said the sight was "like Independence Day" - a reference to the film about an alien invasion of Earth.

Diane Martin from Rainworth in Nottinghamshire said she saw "a bright yellow and orange ball" and considered calling the police before her husband checked the internet and found other people had seen it.

She told the BBC: "We only saw the one. It was quite low as well. It wasn't that far away to be honest. We thought something was actually going to come down in the actual village.

"It was travelling from east to west. It was coming down but it was going across more than it was going down."

Durham Constabulary said they were "inundated" with calls from members of the public across the north-east who were "concerned" as to the sightings of unidentified flying objects lighting up the night sky.

In Wales, sightings were reported between Cardiff and Swansea in the south, Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and Criccieth in Gwynedd.

Howard Parry spotted a "stream of light" while looking out to sea from his caravan in Llanrhystud in Ceredigion at around 23:00 BST.

"I thought first of all it was a plane going down then I thought what the devil is it?

Many of the eyewitness accounts suggest this spectacle was the result of old space hardware falling back to Earth.

Classic meteors - fragments of rock - tend to flash across the sky in an instant.

An incoming satellite on the other hand, can take longer to blaze overhead, giving many more people the chance to notice it.

There is now a wild jungle of redundant hardware in the sky - everything from old rocket stages that continue to loop around the Earth decades after they were launched, to flecks of paint that have lifted off once shiny space vehicles and floated off into the distance.

Gravity demands it all comes back to Earth at some point.

The bigger the returning object, the bigger the light show.

"The best way I can explain it is that it looked like a train with all different carriages on it... it lasted about 25 to 30 seconds.

"I've never seen anything like it - it was really, really bright," he said.

Chris Butler, of Tonypandy in the Rhondda, said he saw "a triangle of orange lights" that "didn't look like a typical meteorite".

'Space debris'

He added: "It looked similar to aeroplane lights but it looked really huge so it obviously wasn't a plane or anything."

Dr Tim O'Brien, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, told the BBC it was difficult to know the cause of the phenomenon.

"It's hard to say exactly, whether it was a chunk of rock coming in from outer space, burning up in the atmosphere or a bit of space debris, we call it, space junk, which is basically man-made stuff from a spacecraft that's burning up in the atmosphere.

"[The object was] probably 80 miles up or so, high up, moving very fast, actually, 18,000 miles an hour, probably, at least."

Colin Johnston, from Armagh Planetarium in Northern Ireland, said the lights were unlikely to be part of a meteor shower.

"There are actually several small, faint, meteor showers scheduled across September but they're so unspectacular, not many people actually bother looking for them.

"I think that actually this spectacle tonight might not be associated with that."

"I think it's something just by chance has happened to come in tonight, some piece of actual space junk floating around the universe for billions of years has just picked tonight to fall in across our skies, or a satellite that's been up for some years has decided to burn up," he said.

Marish Articles ? Neglect Hybrids-Cut your current Carbon Impact ...

?It?s one of many leading 2-3 biggest allies to the almost all serious environmental problems, each and every level coming from local to worldwide. very well Which what an Un record concluded in 2006 while analyzing meat ingestion throughout the world.

Throughout America, we all adore the meat-whether from the care-free summer season bar-b-q or possibly a standard beef dinner. When you are thinking about a high-impact natural living idea, you should think of eating less meats mainly because it will surely have a better effect on your own personal co2 presence (for the excellent! ) as compared to transitioning from your gas-guzzler into a hybrid auto.

For the reason that finest environmental risk of our moment, climate change is one all of us cannot overlook, and your eating habits have an impact with this issue unequalled by the majority of various other causes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Weather transform, while you might have very likely read, is really a significant environmental problem with numerous consequences, along with individuals will be the ones causing the issue. If we may sluggish climate alter, we were actually able to be facing disastrous outcomes:

Polluting of, warmer when compared with typical weather conditions along with severe weather condition activities may negatively have an effect on man into the could accelerate the actual distributed associated with vector-borne diseases.

An increase in droughts, massive amounts, and also critical thunder storms will result in bounty problems and shortages within freshwater materials.

Snow may dissolve more quickly, causing rising sea levels that may bring about territory damage plus the shift of millions of people.

Temperatures will increase faster when compared with plant life as well as wildlife can adjust, triggering quite a few species to become died out.

Those will be the most detrimental possible scenarios, but are real, as well as your diet might be portion of the issue.

Precisely how eating less beef will certainly gradual environment change

Of all the eco-friendly residing adjustments you may make for your living, eating fewer calories beef (and dairy) could possibly have the greatest boom for your buck-it?s more effective as compared to getting foods locally, eating organic, or driving some sort of cross car. However the reason why this kind of? Let me explain:

Deforestation: Raising wildlife with regard to beef results the particular levelling of huge swaths involving jungles around the world. About fifty five massive areas of rainforest needs to develop 1 food consisting of meats necessary protein (John Robbins, writer on the Food Revolution). Trees and shrubs are a major and also carbon kitchen sink (not to say their particular a number of other ecological benefits), thus slicing these people down reduces the particular globe?s power to soak up skin tightening and.

Farming garden greenhouse fuel emissions: 70 pct of all hemp items developed in america are more comfortable with feed animals. Standard harvesting techniques entail huge doses of petroleum-based chemicals (fertilizers along with pesticides) along with the operation regarding weighty machinery which burns up a proportionately large amount of energy, giving out a lot of carbon dioxide.

Enteric effervescence: Since ruminating animals (cows, lamb, goats, along with buffalo) naturally absorb their foodstuff, that they create a potent greenhouse gas: methane, that is a lot more than something like 20 times far better with entangling high temperature in your atmosphere as compared to carbon. In accordance with the UN?s Food and Cultivation Company, having meat is accountable to 37% involving methane, 9% coming from all carbon, and 65% associated with nitrous oxide-all which tend to be green house gases.

Of course , we similar to hybrid cars as well as natural food and gladly really encourage them. Nevertheless an inexpensive and much more efficient solution to reside an environmentally friendly life-style along with cut your own greenhouse propane emissions would be to merely trim meats out of your diet plan at least one day weekly. This would be such as traveling your car or truck a single, 000 fewer kilometers each year. Please remember: not only tend to be veggie organic meals recipes innovative along with delightful, they may more healthy when compared with meat-based foods, as well!
